Container trade declines in Melbourne - VY KHANG TRADING AND TRANSPORTATION JSC

The Port of Melbourne announced its total container throughput in September reached 267,392 TEUs, translating to a 6.9% decrease from the same month last year.

The full container imports (excluding Bass Strait) were down in September by 7.2%, with domestic appliances, furniture, toys, and sporting items falling short of last year’s volumes.

Furthermore, full container exports (excluding Bass Strait) were 3.8% lower compared to September 2022, with wheat, hay, chaff & fodder, and raw cotton volumes falling short of last year.

At the same time, total empty container movements in the major Australian port were 5.8% lower, while full transshipments showed a 20.5% decline.

As it seems on the above graph, container trade in the port of Melbourne is at significantly lower levels compared with the previous year with all the figures having decreased. The only exception is found in the full transshipment sector, which has shown a slight year-over-year growth of 0.8% for the January-September period.
